Guide­lines Call for Increase in Vit­a­min D

New guide­lines for vit­a­min D call for increas­ing the rec­om­mended dietary allowance (RDA) of vit­a­min D to 600 inter­na­tional units (IU) for every­one aged 1–70, and rais­ing it to 800 IU for adults older than 70 to opti­mize bone health. The guide­lines, released by the Insti­tute of Med­i­cine (IOM), also raised daily cal­cium RDAs.

Mid­dle aged and elderly peo­ple with high lev­els of vit­a­min D could reduce their chances of devel­op­ing heart dis­ease or dia­betes by 43%, accord­ing to researchers at the Uni­ver­sity of Warwick.

A team of researchers at War­wick Med­ical School car­ried out a sys­tem­atic lit­er­a­ture review of stud­ies exam­in­ing vit­a­min D and car­diometa­bolic disorders.

Two new stud­ies add to evi­dence that older peo­ple with low lev­els of vit­a­min D may be more likely to suf­fer from cog­ni­tive impairment.

The hope is that vit­a­min D sup­ple­ments may be able to slow men­tal decline — an inter­ven­tion that one research team plans to put to the test this summer.
