Tai Chi May Pro­vide Arthri­tis Relief

Arthri­tis patients may gain phys­i­cal and emo­tional relief from the ancient Chi­nese art of Tai Chi, finds a new study, the largest of its kind.

Patients with osteoarthri­tis, rheuma­toid arthri­tis and fibromyal­gia felt bet­ter and moved more eas­ily after tak­ing twice-weekly classes in Tai Chi, a sys­tem of med­i­ta­tive exer­cise, researchers found.

Their abil­ity to reach while main­tain­ing bal­ance also improved, said Leigh Calla­han, PhD, the study’s lead author, asso­ciate pro­fes­sor in the Uni­ver­sity of North Car­olina at Chapel Hill School of Med­i­cine and a mem­ber of UNC’s Thurston Arthri­tis Research Center.

Com­pared with patients who received well­ness edu­ca­tion and stretch­ing exer­cises, those who prac­ticed tai chi saw their fibromyal­gia become much less severe.
